Employment Growth

Though the creation of employment largely rests on the private sector responding to private demands, the City plays a key role in creating the conditions for success. Tracking employment growth is important because it provides an indication of the strength of our economy.
Employment growth measures the annual rate of change in estimates of the number of employed persons aged 15 years and older in the Edmonton census metropolitan area (CMA).
Estimates come from Statistics Canada through their Labour Force Survey. Growing employment indicates a strengthening economy.
Between 2022 and 2023, the number of employed residents in the Edmonton CMA grew 5.1 per cent from 808,500 to 849,700. This continued growth surpasses the pre-COVID-19 peak employment of 779,500 in 2019.
